What is Sports Massage?

Sports massage in New Malden — what to expect.

Sports massage is a clinical, hands on therapy targeting the muscles, tendons and soft tissue to resolve pain, restrict movement and dysfunction. Unlike a relaxation massage, every technique has a specific outcome in mind — and every session starts with an assessment of what your body actually needs.

Nick works from his private practice on Beverley Road, New Malden (KT3 4AW). He assesses how you move, identifies what's driving the problem, and applies targeted treatment — whether that's a specific injury, chronic tightness, or a pattern that hasn't responded to rest. For deep-seated or longstanding tension, deep tissue massage may be more appropriate — Nick can advise after the first session.

Most clients are not athletes. Desk workers, drivers, parents and people with everyday pain make up the majority of the caseload. If your body is getting in the way of daily life, sports massage is likely to help.

Sessions are 60 or 90 minutes. The 90-minute session is the most popular, allowing thorough work across multiple areas for results that last.

Conditions Treated

Common conditions Nick treats regularly.

Sports massage is effective for a wide range of musculoskeletal problems, not just sports injuries.

🦵

Muscle Tightness

Chronically tight quads, hamstrings, calves or hip flexors restricting movement and causing referred pain elsewhere in the body.

😣

Lower Back Pain

Often driven by tight hips, weak glutes or restricted thoracic mobility rather than the back itself. Treatment addresses the actual cause.

🧠

Tension Headaches

Tight suboccipital and upper trapezius muscles are a leading cause. Massage directly addresses this pattern effectively.

🏃

Running Injuries

IT band syndrome, runner's knee, plantar fasciitis and calf strains, all commonly and effectively treated.

💼

Neck & Shoulder Pain

A result of desk posture, stress or repetitive use. Targeted work through the upper back and shoulder girdle resolves the pattern.

Sciatica

Piriformis syndrome and nerve tension causing pain, numbness or tingling down the leg, often highly responsive to soft tissue work.

Also treating: golfer's elbow, tennis elbow, hip pain, stress-related tension, driver stiffness, manual worker pain, and more. View all conditions →

01

Understanding your symptoms, history and what your body demands day to day before any treatment begins.

02

Treatment

Targeted hands on work using the right techniques for your specific situation, not a generic protocol.

03

Restore

Getting you back to full range of motion and the way your body is supposed to feel.

04

Maintain

Tailored advice and stretches so results carry forward long after the session ends.

"With a calf injury four weeks out from Copenhagen Marathon, Nick was incredibly thorough. I made it to the start line and finished in 3 hours 6 minutes. I'm convinced he's half therapist, half magician."

"Very professional, knowledgeable and attentive. Nick took an interest in finding the cause of my shoulder and neck pain — experienced for more than 10 years — and worked on an old spasm in my lower back that no other therapist had been interested in. I will be back next week."

Common Questions

Before you book your sports massage.

Sports massage treats a wide range of musculoskeletal problems — not just sports injuries. Common presentations include lower back pain, tension headaches, neck and shoulder pain, running injuries, sciatica, tight hamstrings and hip flexors, and general muscle tightness. Most clients are desk workers or people with everyday pain.
For a recent or acute problem, 2-3 sessions close together produces the fastest results. For chronic or longstanding issues, allow 4-6 sessions. For ongoing maintenance, monthly or fortnightly works well. You'll get an honest recommendation after your first session — no pressure to commit upfront.
It can feel intense in tight or overloaded areas but should never be unbearable. Pressure is always adjusted to your comfort. Some people experience mild soreness for 24-48 hours after, which is normal and fades quickly.
Not at all. Most clients are desk workers, drivers, parents and people with everyday pain — not athletes. Sports massage is named for its clinical approach, not its clientele. If your body is in pain or not moving well, it will likely help.
